Bicycle side project - Dropout animation

Here’s a relativley quick animation I did for a dropout that I designed for a personal frame building project. For those uninitiated, the dropout is where the wheel attaches on a bicycle frame.

I could probably tidy up the lighting a bit as there are some dark spots. And at some point I’ll try to make some animation with a more exciting environment.

Nice work! I myself like to commute on my cycle on weekend. Is this going to use thru axle or quick release for the wheel?

It’s going to use a Thru-axle using SRAM’s new UDH derailleur hanger with an integrated thread.

Just visited your website, great team and product portfolio you got there. I had one query if you don’t mind. Which software do you use for 3D modeling and also simulating/validating your designs? I am a design engineer myself so a bit curious.

I use SolidWorks for 3D modeling, but I’ve been contemplating a platform switch to Autodesk Fusion. The type of bikes we design and manufacture have mostly known variables, so the design validation mostly happens in real life via lab testing of prototypes.

For more advanced (metal) projects, I provide the overall design with parameters (such as material choice, thickness etc) chosen by me, we let the engineers at our specialist manufacturing partners validate the choices I’ve made before a prototype run. Most of the time the only adjustments that are needed are non-structural.

For carbon fibre projects, I only provide the overall shape and design of a product and the specialist carbon fibre engineers will determine the layup and structure based on the use-criteria of the product.
We then produce several samples that get tested in the lab and in real life before going to production.

Thanks for sharing, I myself have been using Solidworks since my undergrad time. Personally I also use Fusion, but recently my manager bought me a subscription of Inventor pro and this seems like a better cad tool of Autodesk platform, recommended over Fusion. Most of my works involve sheet metal and injection molded parts.
